Project Case Study

Natwest, Huntingdon

During a routine reactive maintenance visit to the site, Glyntree’s engineers identified numerous issues within this historic Grade II listed building. The engineer’s detailed report was subsequently forwarded to the relevant authorities, and Glyntree was entrusted with the responsibility of restoring another valuable piece of our heritage.

Scaffolding for the project was supplied by Glyntree’s accredited partners, and restoration works commenced in October 2024. A commitment was made to complete the project prior to Christmas 2024.

The scope of work included replacing all lead hips on the main building, lead aprons in the box gutter, and all defective slates across the site. Vegetation and buddleias were removed from the parapet, and spalling bricks were replaced.

The project also included the extensive restoration of spalling stonework on the main façade, renovating sash windows and their frames, and repairing the deteriorating roof dormer. Additionally, coping stones and spalling surfaces on the lower roof were removed and restored, and the lead gutters were refurbished.

Upon completion of the works to the frontage, Glyntree carried out extensive paint removal from the stone capitals and fully rebuilt a section of decayed limestone.

Glyntree managed the entire project from preliminary stages through to completion, ensuring quality workmanship and adherence to safety standards.

Furthermore, we responsibly relocated a honeybee hive encountered on site as part of our commitment to environmental stewardship.

HYDE PARK BANDSTAND

Hyde Park’s bandstand is one of the oldest in Britain. Built in 1869 it originally stood in Kensington Gardens but was moved to Hyde Park in 1886. Glyntree had the honour of restoring the bandstand to its former glory.

GUTTER REFURBISHMENTS – THE OLD POLICE HOUSE HYDE PARK

Glyntree recently surveyed The Old Police House, a Grade II listed building in Hyde Park, after a cast iron guttering section fell into a private residence. We assessed the damage and proposed refurbishing the timber fascia and replacing the damaged guttering. We sourced an exact match for the original cast iron guttering adhering to the building's heritage status.

Our team installed the new guttering and downpipe, ensuring functionality and aesthetic continuity by specialist equipment. The project was completed quickly and professionally, preserving the building's historical integrity.

Flat Roof Repair – Clapham

Our client required urgent repairs to a flat roof in Clapham following significant water ingress. A comprehensive internal pre-condition survey was conducted in conjunction with a detailed external assessment of the roof. Based on these evaluations, we recommended the application of a cold-applied liquid roofing system to refurbish the existing felt surface. This solution was selected for its durability and its capacity to provide a seamless, long-lasting waterproof barrier.

The refurbishment process was completed over a two-week period, utilizing specialist access and cleaning equipment to ensure meticulous preparation of the roof surfaces. Following the surface preparation, Glyntree’s experienced roofing team applied a three-coat reinforced mesh system, resulting in a fully waterproofed surface designed to effectively prevent future water ingress.

Pitched Slate Roof Repair – Gravesend

Over the course of several years, this pitched roof underwent multiple repairs and sustained damage as a result of vandalism. The damaged slate tiles were carefully removed and replaced with high-quality tiles to restore the roof’s structural integrity and aesthetic appearance.

MESH FENCING – EDGEWARE

Our clients requested an economical solution to secure a flat roof against unauthorised access and vandalism. A mesh fencing system was recommended and subsequently installed to address these security concerns.

BOX GUTTER REPLACEMENT – BROMPTON CEMETARY

The Royal Parks of London requested that we address recurring roofing issues at a property in Brompton Cemetery. A specialist survey was commissioned to determine the appropriate course of action, given the nature of the ongoing issues. It was found that the box guttering had deteriorated significantly due to age and required re-lining.

Several previous repairs were identified, all of which had failed to provide a long-term solution. The failed repairs were carefully documented, and it was concluded that a more permanent remedy was necessary to mitigate further damage. Our reactive team carried out the removal of the existing guttering and subsequently installed a new cold-applied liquid lining.

This solution was selected to enhance the longevity of the roof and improve its performance, as liquid applied systems offer a seamless, durable, and flexible alternative to traditional methods. The successful implementation of the cold-applied liquid lining is expected to extend the lifespan of the guttering and reduce the likelihood of further issues. Glyntree’s team ensured that the work was completed to a high standard, addressing the concerns of both the property owners and the maintenance requirements of The Royal Parks of London.

Staircase Refurbishment – Lowestoft

The fire escape and associated staircase at the Lowestoft site were identified as being in a state of disrepair, characterized by deteriorated paint coatings and compromised structural integrity of the walkway.

Our team conducted a comprehensive site assessment and proceeded with the following scope of works:

  • Surface preparation involving thorough cleaning of the staircase, walkway, and stair treads to remove loose paint, corrosion, and debris.
  • Application of appropriate drying procedures to ensure optimal adhesion.
  • Structural repairs to address any identified damage or deterioration in the metal components.
  • Surface treatment with corrosion-resistant coatings, specifically utilizing Black and Yellow Hammerite finishes, applied as per manufacturer specifications to enhance durability and safety.

This refurbishment process aimed to restore the structural safety, corrosion resistance, and visual compliance of the fire escape and staircase in accordance with relevant safety standards.
